copy of andrew vastagh, beck

I love the way a Caribbean theme has been caught in the poster through the simple outline beach scene and basic shade of summer sunset colours. To copy this poster I created a stencil for each layer of colour. using a paint brush I carefully filled in each section giving the same effect. I find Andrew's work to be inviting and stylish.

Dan Mc Carthy karate cambridge

This poster by Dan I thought was simplistic and stylish. I like the colours of the leaves and how they fade into different greens as the green get higher. The connection of nature and modern day can be seen clearly in this poster. focusing on a friendship group and their social life it is clear to see that in the modern day people are to busy and forget to look around and appreciate nature and the world around them.

Copies of acid mother temple poster

I have been inspired by Dylan because of his bright overlapping colours which has create many designs through layering his work. Here I have tried copying one of his pieces through creating my own designs and layering them using the same colours. By hand drawing them  and scanning them into the computer I was able to manipulate the layers and colours to match Dylan's orignal piece. Dylan would have used a silkscreen method to produce his poster and carefully place one colour on top of each other while giving the man a realistic effect using a photographic image.this has inspired me to used caroon depth in my final peice and bright constrating colours.

Casestudy

Case study
The adverting music poster of “je suis France-The Antarcticas- Acid mother temple” has a psychedelic 60s look. Je suis France is one of the many bands who create acid mother temple. In total there are around 30 members of this psychedelic Japanese band. Each member has a different background and profession from dancers and farmers to artists of all kinds. The title of the band “je suis France” translated in French means “I am France”. This statement holds power and strength between each word setting the bands members up as ambassadors of their country whilst touring with their music.

Looking at the poster the mixed range of colours, pink yellow and orange instantly catches the observer’s eye. The colours bounce of one another as they flowingly overlap and combine. The poster features a photographed portrait of a man, centred behind the mixed array of colours, with effects to drain the natural colours from the photograph and made the pixels bigger and clearer to see. This effect appears better and more pleasing to the eye from further away. I like the over arching theme in the poster of bright colours and a psychedelic look and how the work has been contextually influents through team work and the band wanted to document their journey working and playing together.

There is a link to another poster, which is similar in design. The design “Mr. Tambourine Man” has a similar layout. The poster stays busy like “Je suis France” but in limited use of colour and shape. There are similar effects such as the large pixels spreading across the centred face. Studying the poster there are many shared methods and processes which the designer for “je suis France” and “ Mr. Tambourine Man” have been through. Between their designed ideas I have discovered different ways in which methods and processes can be used in contrasting ways.

The colour pallet is very vibrant and full of life. I feel that the pink dominates the poster overlapping yellow to create the orange tone. The process evolved to create this effect would be silk screen where Dylan would layer each designed layer on top of one another to create the end effect. The mix of realistic and stylised imagery allows the designer to make many statements allowing the mind to dream of all possibilities. The artist has used the colours effectively through the mix of saturated bright colours overpowering each other.

The portrait of the man hiding behind the detail decoration of the poster is displayed in blue associated with coldness and emptiness, analysing the hidden man he is portray to be a shy lost soul looking for a better life. The surrounding decoration is filled with embracing colour portraying and positive light on the poster but contrastingly the shapes around the portrait are cartoon ghosts and reaching out hands, mixed in with swirls with flower like qualities. The space has been used intelligently throughout the poster with even spaces of white between each lay of colour. The “Je suis France” poster holds together tightly but comfortable exploding with colour and detail. I really like the way everything has been tightly compacted in, it makes the poster more eye catching interesting for the observes who would possible become customers which would lead to bigger and better things for the band. Posters like these would often be seen in a magazine which would lead to further information bout their gig. The poster being displayed in a magazine would have more of an impact on the public as they would have the time to study it and compress the images and information for them to appreciate the art and become more involved in the band and its where abouts.

The artist has chosen these certain materials to work in so the poster still remains simple to produce but with lot of detail and depth. Depth can be clearly seen in the layers of colours, with each colour hold a different design. Everything remains controlled from the chosen colours to the size of the pixels the portrait is displayed in. The arrangement of images are carefully thought out, stylised drawings makes the layers have more depth. The layered silk screen process adds depth through its tones and arrangements of images. The photographic portrait of a man appears through the poster realistically but simply adding life to the poster. The face is shown through a pointillism media enlarging the pixels.

The process of silk screen starts off with designed images which will be cut out. Once cut out a sheet of paper, it shall be place on top of another sheet of paper which the finish design will be placed on. When in placed the silk screen is put on top and clamp in place. The printing ink will be spread along the bottom of the silk screen. Using a squeegee to spread the ink across the design, the artist will tightly run it a cross the silk screen gathering the ink at the end to run across the design again. Repeating this process a second time ensures the design has been fully printed to a good quality.

The first thing which drew my eye to the poster was its mixed array of colour weaving together. Although it is a modern poster it reminds me of the 60s and the inspiration people had back then. I feel very excited looking at it, widening my eyes to fit its complex design in. I don't personally like the portrait of the man I find is to be very bland against the layered animated images. Known the history of acid mother temple I find the poster to be very emotive, trying to reintroduce the love and passion they have for teamwork and reuniting as a unit. This has inspired me to do something similar in my own work.
Studying this case study by Dylan have have been able to capture his style in detail, looking at the thought process behind his art work. In the case study design I have designed it to fit in to Dylan's artistic style with additional words. For instance I have kept the same morals of the band but translated it in to the bands original language, Japanese. Ongaku meaning music, Chi-muwa-ku meaning team work and Kenpei meaning unity. I feel this works well, with the psychedelic background and its world peace morals of working together to create a style based on Dylan's work.

Roughs

Here I have exspanded on the thumnails and manpilualted their shape and size into create different designs.

Thumbnails

following on, I have thumbnail the possible designs I would have in my final piece. They are all based around the dreamy 60's lifestyle. From these ideas I will combined them together to create different images which help develop my final piece.

Icondgraphy or Paraphenaua

This mood board looks at the different aspects of a hippies life, such as where they may live to their hobbies and fashion. Cartoon images and designs play a massive role in their lives, which I will use the media in my final piece.

photos of theme

These photos focus on different cultures and regions combined together which has detailed my thought process to involve all cultures such as the 60's generation being interested and respectful towards others cultural backgrounds.

Drawings of theme

Here I have expanded my ideas and developed my designs based on my theme for my psychedelic music poster.
